Reviews for One Bedroom Apartment 'Belle Époque'

"This is a wonderful place from which to explore the Cote d'Azure. We spent two wonderful weeks in Villefranche at Belle Epoque. This year we did something different by taking the bus (Nice's gare routiere, or Nice airport) for 1 euro to Isola 2000 for two days of skiing ...

... It's a 2 l/2 hour bus ride (you could also bus to Auron which is 2 hours). We rented skis and boots right at the hotel (Hotel du Soleil Le Chastillon via booking.com) and skied out the door to 360 degrees of ski slopes. This is the Alpes Maritimes, so the skiing is equivalent to some of the slopes in Colorado at 8-9000 ft. There was not a cloud in the sky both days, and the skiing was varied, with mid-slope huts offering sun deck chairs and lodges for respite and imbibing. We enjoyed it so much, we are thinking of bringing our grandchildren next time. The trip only increased our love for the south of France!

La Belle Epoque in Winter. We have had seven blissful weeks in Villefranche-Sur-Mer. The apartment 'La Belle Epoque' contributed hugely to our enjoyment. It was a warm, snug refuge on our few wet days and, when the sun was out, delightful to sit on the ...

... comfortably furnished balcony looking out over the old town and sea and sip a morning coffee or beer! We didn't use the barbecue - the sun leaves the balcony around mid-day which must be welcome in the summer. The local restaurants are excellent but there was all we needed to cook (there is a small dishwasher), watch TV, and read. The books were varied and very useful for those travelling light, as was the washing machine cunningly concealed in the bathroom. The décor was simple with original paintings by a local artist and the furniture was well chosen to make the living space practical but elegant. The bed was very comfortable and the wardrobe easily coped with our winter clothes. We appreciated the Wifi and were able to 'Skype' family and friends so home sickness was kept at bay. In winter there can be a chill wind but we saw some hardy souls on the beach and even in the sea. We enjoyed lovely coastal walks, went on the train (good service along the coast) to the Hippodrome at Cagnes-Sur-Mer and lost a few euros on the horses. We didn't have a car but used excellent buses to take us up to the nature reserve above Eze and to villages in the hills. Next time we will do a big shop for all the essentials in Beaulieu and get a taxi home. Finally, we especially appreciated Heide, our calm, friendly and efficient apartment manager. It was the icing on the cake so well designed by the owners, Eamon and Eileen.

"The beauty of the Riviera framed your window. We have stayed in Nice on many occasions since 1973 and thought a more peaceful location nearby would make a pleasant change. We booked over the internet on the basis of the photos and description and were delighted ...

... that they proved 100% accurate. The week we booked was part of a 7 week drive to apartments in France, Germany and Italy, including a week overlooking Lake Como near Menaggio. Our stay at the Belle Époque in Villefranche-sur-Mer was a clear winner and not just because we had good weather there, we were lucky in having good weather everywhere. The apartment is extremely well located, a steady, but not extreme climb from the waterfront cafes, which is what we liked to help burn off the effects of a good lunch or dinner. The bus stop for the local service to Nice and Monaco is very close and is a convenient, excellent and inexpensive (1.50 euros) way to visit those interesting places. Cap Ferat is not far away and can be reached by bus or on foot. We took the train to Cannes from the Villefranche station which is not too far away from the apartment. The apartment was clean, tidy and quiet with modern appointments blended effectively with traditional furniture which made it feel like it was our home. If there is one suggestion we would make, it is that a microwave oven would have been handy. We often purchased excellent pre-prepared meals from Picard which was about a 10 minute walk away. It just meant that we used the full oven which uses more electricity and is not quite as rapid, but that is a very minor point. The view from the spacious verandah was exceptional and a lovely place for breakfast or evening drinks. Looking out first thing in the morning to see huge cruise liners moored close to shore in the bay was always spectacular. A big positive was having Eamon's charming representative, Sue, meet us upon our arrival to explain all we needed to know about the apartment and making herself available to deal with any problems, even though we had no need for that service during our stay. We were fortunate to snag a free parking spot near the apartment and did not move the car once. Being late September/early October may have had something to do with our luck on that score. We would have no hesitation in recommending Belle Epoque to anyone and will, no doubt seek to stay there when we return to the Riviera. Great spot thanks Eamon."

"We spent a wonderful week at La Belle Epoque. Booking the apartment could not have been easier and Eamon, the owner, provided us with extensive and practical information about facilities and location, as well as transport, restaurants and local shops ...

... all of which were within easy walking distance. Transfer from the airport and handover arrangements were made by Sue, the apartment manager, for whom nothing was too much trouble.
The apartment is very well furnished in a traditional and elegant French style and the 'piece de resistance' is the large terrace with beautiful views of the bay towards St-Jean-Cap-Ferrat.
In summary, an excellent apartment, central location and superb views. What more could one ask for a relaxing holiday.

"Perfect view! My husband and I spent a wonderful, relaxing week at this beautiful apartment. The view is fantastic, the restaurants are charming, and the people are delightful. It was so quite that my husband was able to get a lot of work done writing his next book. A visit to the Chapel St. Pierre, with amazing and unusual paintings by Jean Cocteau, is worth a visit in itself. But, nothing could top the wine on the terrace each evening watching the nightly fireworks. A perfectly equipped apartment in a beautiful setting. Highly recommended.

"This is a wonderful apartment. We loved waking up every morning and walking to the local boulangerie just down the hill. Breakfast on the sunny balcony was the next treat. The apartment is very clean with an excellent queen bed. The picture accurately depicts the apartment. The kitchen is fairly well stocked with adequate cookware. The gas grill is a plus. We would definitely return for an even longer stay."

We booked this holiday last minute and was not dissapointed with our choice. The apartment was well equipped with dishwasher a boon and also the washing machine, plenty of kitchen utencils. Sue who met us at the apartment was most informative of ...

... the area and also provided a map and also organised our taxi to and from the airport. Binnoculars are provided in the apartment, which were very useful to watch the coming and goings of the boat and large cruise ships. The view of the bay is spectacular from the terrace. The bed was especially comfortable.

The amenities were well within walking distance, but be warned and wear sensible shoes, the steps are steep, but that's the charm of Villefranche. Everyone we met be it on the local beach or drinking hole, we found to be very friendly. You certainly can't get away from the old charm of the place. A very relaxing holiday indeed and we shall return.

We stayed here in July with our 10 month old son - the apartment, location, and setting made the long trip from San Francisco well worth it! The apartment looks exactly as shown in the pictures and was spotless. For us, the setting was perfect given we ...

... walk to the beach or around town and return and enjoy the balcony while the baby napped. It was also a great location to explore the local area, both East and West, which were easily accessible by bus. The only thing I would advise parents with small children is that it is easier to navigate the town with a carrier as strollers are tough on the cobblestones and stairs. The local contact, Sue, met us upon arrival and provided thorough information (including a great restaurant in town who's name escapes me) while also arranging a taxi to take us back to the airport. Lastly, we didn't need to bring baby items - both the crib and high chair provided were clean and comfortable. Can't wait to go back some day - thank you for a wonderful vacation!

My daughter and I rented the apartment for a week in early June 2010. In contrast to our other rentals during an extended stay in France, this location was spotlessly clean, well furnished and equipped, and our "hostess", Susan, was welcoming ...

... and a wonderful resource regarding the area. The apartment was charming, sunny, and comfortable, and the floor plan was great. A short walking distance to the bus stop, train station, or the shops/shore.

As far as Villefranche, it's a fantastic central location to all the best southern France has to offer. Next trip, we'll skip Paris and Lyon and just stay in the south...plenty of great museums and restaurants and shops, but you get relaxation, beautiful weather and a gorgeous ocean on top of that.

"My wife and I stayed two weeks at La Belle Epoque in the Old Town of Villefranche-sur-Mer from March 26 - April 9, 2011. Partly to escape the cold and snow of a Canadian winter, but also to immerse ourselves into the local French culture ...

... I had spent the previous three months improving my French and this was the opportunity to practice it "live".
We were met as arranged at Nice Airport by the local taxi service, and by Vivi at the apartment. Our first impression was one of amazement when we looked at the roof top view from the balcony, and the space, appointment and facilities of the apartment - especially the natural light and the Mediterranean decor - everything as was advertised on the Web site.
As other clients have mentioned, the apartment's location is perfect for local stores and restaurants, and of course the amazing public transit system (nothing comparable in North America!).
During our stay we did occasionally eat-in - the local butcher, baker and green-grocer on Rue d'Eglise always willing to accommodate my French - our favourite restaurant was La Belle Epoque located just below the apartment, plus the numerous cafe and restaurants for our morning 'cafe au lait'. The weather during our two week stay was amazing - sunshine everyday - 22 C on average.
Our favourite places to visit included the fantastic Ville & Jardins Ephrussi de Rothschild - the 81 bus drops you at the entrance - numerous trips to Nice and a day spent in Grasse.
On a more mundane level, we appreciated the apartment's washing machine, as we still had additional travel plans before heading for home.

Would we recommend La Belle Epoque to others - ABSOLUTELY."

Living the good life - Our stay in this lovely apartment was everything we hoped it would be. The apartment itself was spotless, well equipped and centrally located. The decor was welcoming and relaxing, we looked forward to coming back to ...

... it as a home base after being out and about. The pictures are accurate and nothing compares to the view from every window. Villefranche is a gem, we wanted a relaxing, rather than sightseeing holiday so many days enjoyed just walking around the village and area, taking in the town and waterfront. Our only mistake was in renting a car. We should have paid more attention to previous reviewers who said not to. We only used it three times in the month we were there and next time will stick to the buses and trains which are frequent, efficient and inexpensive. This was meant to be a winter holiday away from the cold and snow in Canada so we were not expecting it to be warm. Having said that, the temperatures were mostly mild, with a good amount of sun, although jackets were needed. We have every intention of returning to Villefranche and to Eamon and Eileen's gem of an apartment, hopefully next year.

Perfect Two Weeks - We've just spent two weeks in the apartment, which have been absolutely perfect. It's the third time we've rented the accommodation which is exactly as described on the website. We arrived by taxi from Nice Airport which was ...

... arranged by Sue, the apartment manager. The trip was only around 20 mins and cost 50 euro, which is a lot cheaper than just getting a taxi at the rank. We were met at the apartment by Sue who is very welcoming and has lots of information about what there is to do in Villefranche and the surrounding area as well as some practical advise about buses, trains, restaurants etc. The apartment itself is spacious and airy, with high ceilings and three full height sets of 'french windows' complete with shutters that open out on to the balcony, which must have one of the best views on the Riviera. You look over the rooftops of Villefranche-sur-Mer across the bay to Cap Ferrat. Day or night we found it amazing. We spent hours on the balcony reading and drinking the local rose wine. It really is the perfect place to relax. Villefranche is great to walk around with enough local food shops to provide whatever you need. There is a small food market on Saturday Morning near the tourist office which has local produce, meats, cheeses and fish. We found that the trains and buses were the best way to get around. The bus stop is only around 300m from the apartment with buses to Nice or Monaco every 20 mins.(cost 1 euro!) The train station must be one of the most scenic in the world and is ten minutes walk, with trains to Italy or Cannes. We went to Ventimilgia over the border in Italy on the train on a Friday where there is a huge market and many traditional Italian trattorias serving fantastic food. We There is so much to see and do whether its the hustle and bustle of Nice or Cannes or the beauty of villages like Eze and St Paul de Vence , This apartment in Villefranche provides an ideal base for a superb holiday in the South of France its in a great location has lots of charm and is furnished to a high standard. Next year will be the fourth time we have returned and it probably not be our last!!

"Can't wait to stay here again. This apartment is a gem. We were met on arrival by the manager, shown the apartment, given tips and information about Villefranche and made welcome with flowers and a bottle of wine. The apartment was spotless ...

... well equipped and the spectacular views from every window were just as shown in the listing. The photos are accurate, you get what you see. The kitchen has everything needed for holiday cooking, there are plenty of towels and linens including beach towels and equipment, although the time of year we were there was not beach weather. The balcony is big with comfortable furniture and the amazing view to sit and take in with a glass of wine after a day of exploring. The only difficulty we had was a spotty wi-fi connection but eventually that cleared up so we were able to connect with family. When we had to call the manager, she was usually there within 15 minutes. The location is perfect, just off the main road but far enough so that noise is not a concern, yet close enough to the main road for an easy walk to shops and transportation. We explored the village thoroughly, got to know the local butcher, boulangeries, restaurants, etc., and were made welcome by all. It was easy to go into Nice, Monaco, Menton and other villages by bus or train. We stayed a month and have every intention of doing the same again next year. One hint, do not rent a car! The public transportation is so good, frequent and reliable that we only used our rental car three times in a month. Lesson learned!
